Clients may be involved in the design process as much or as little as they choose. Some clients want us to come up with a complete design package for their review and approval. Others prefer to work with us as a team throughout the process, sharing ideas, opinions and resources along the way. The choice is up to you. Regardless of how we decide to work together, most projects follow the process described below.

Step 1

Each project begins with a complimentary consultation in your home (Approximately 1 1/2 hours) to talk about your needs and how we can fulfill them. Below are a of the elements we will discuss to gain a better vision of the project scope.

  • Develop an assessment of your personal style, color preference and goals for the project.
  • Discover the mood and effect you want to achieve.
  • Recommend architectural changes as appropriate.
  • Establish an preliminary budget.

Step 2

The second step is a formal agreement. This is where we outline the basic parameters of the project, layout the budget, the general timing and agreed upon fee structure. At this time we will also conduct a formal survey of the space, taking measurements for the layout and elevation.

Step 3

Based on a combination of what we've learned from you, plus our own expertise, we will present our design plan through the use of photos, floor plans, fabric, paint and flooring samples and other materials we recommend for the project. Below are a list of elements that are usually covered in a formal presentation.

  • A layout plan and selection of proposed furniture, artwork and accessories.
  • A plan for reusing existing furniture and accessories.
  • A recommendation for custom window treatments.
  • A recommendation for floor and wall treatments.
  • A plan for interior finishes.
  • A space planning recommendation.
  • A lighting plan.
  • A color consultation with recommended fabric selection.
  • A list of contractors to complete the project.

Step 4

Once the final design is approved, furnishings and materials are ordered and all painting, construction and other work are scheduled. We oversee the entire process to insure that the work is of the highest quality.

Fee Structure

We would be happy to provide our services in increments, so you can try us out before making a major commitment. For example, the initial phase could be limited to a consultation and the preparation of a basic conceptual plan for one or more rooms.

Before getting started, we will arrive at a mutually acceptable fee arrangement. Initial design work is generally provided on an hourly fee basis, subject to a maximum limit. Furnishings are generally provided on the basis of a mark-up over our cost. If the project involves construction, we can monitor construction services based on an hourly fee or a percentage of the project cost. Most projects involve a combination of the above. Or we can discuss any other arrangement that you think would work. In any event, we will always agree ahead of time on fees so there will be no surprises later.
